Comprehensive Bio
Dr. Michael A. Lefkowitz is a neurosurgeon specializing in adult and pediatric complex spinal surgery and minimally invasive spinal surgery. He is a graduate of the New York University School of Medicine and completed his Neurosurgery Residency at the University of Southern California. He subsequently pursued advanced fellowship training in Interventional Neuroradiology at the UCLA Medical Center and Complex Spine Surgery at the University of Tennessee in Memphis. He joined Long Island Neurosurgical Associates (LINA) in 2002.
Dr. Lefkowitz is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is an active member of major national neurosurgical societies and has authored numerous publications and presentations spanning complex spine surgery, interventional neuroradiology, and general neurosurgery.
Dr. Lefkowitz is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. In this capacity, Dr. Lefkowitz participates in the education of medical students and Neurosurgery residents. In recognition of his teaching, Dr. Lefkowitz has been named as a Teacher of the Year in the Neurosurgery Department.
Dr. Lefkowitz has served on the teaching faculty for national and international conferences for minimally invasive and general spinal surgery and has advised spinal instrumentation companies on new technology development.
With extensive training and more than two decades of collaboration with LINA’s pediatric neurosurgeons, Dr. Lefkowitz has developed regional expertise in pediatric complex spinal surgery. While most of his practice centers on adult degenerative spinal disease, he frequently performs spinal surgery at the Cohen Children’s Medical Center.
Dr. Lefkowitz has been repeatedly recognized by Castle Connolly and New York Magazine and Newsday as a “Top Doctor,” reflecting his excellence in spine surgery and patient-centered care.
In his spare time, Dr. Lefkowitz enjoys skiing, football, traveling, art and spending time with his wife and children.
